There's a dark satisfaction in the way that Meg's eyes widen in surprise, but by the time it travels through Ellen it leaves her feeling cold and numb.
She watches as Meg turns to face the onslaught of hellhounds. Watches the blade slice into invisible flesh, dark drops and then pools of blood mixing at Meg's feet, but her own blood is flowing too. More and more, the red mixes with the black until she falls.
And Ellen wants to look away, because no one should be willingly watching this, but she can't. She can feel her her stomach turn and still she won't allow herself to look away as that meatsuit is torn to pieces. She wonders if the girl Meg possessed has mother out there somewhere and then suddenly her legs give way out from underneath her.
She sits there for what feels like an eternity, watching that blood travel across the floor and mix with the salt. She wonders if it will wash the barrier away, but she's not that surprised when she finds that she doesn't care anymore.
It doesn't and the hellhounds seem satisfied for the moment. Eventually, even they go away and she's left alone.
