Ned doesn't realize that something is of until Meyer is quite close, in his personal space, and his regular defenses kick in. Perhaps he ought to have been more concerned, when Meyer admitted to his vampirism. He is all alone here, with a blood-drinker, acting as if nothing could possibly go wrong.

Ned doesn't pull away or try to run. He doesn't want to be rude, if this really is nothing. But that look Meyer is giving him, as if he were dinner, makes him pretty sure it's not nothing.
