Meyer is sitting in the kitchen, focusing so intently on something he's scribbling in his notebook that he either doesn't notice Charlie walking in, or at the very least, doesn't seem to acknowledge him. There's a book open on the table next to his notebook, and he seems extremely interested in whatever is in it -- if Charlie gets closer, he'll see that, of course, it's a book about mathematics. What else would it be?
In order to distract himself from the fact that he wants coffee and a cigarette, he has a fork in the hand that isn't holding his pen, and he seems to be eating olives straight from the can. Nobody ever said he didn't have questionable eating habits.
