Where: Basement
What: Exploring. Hellhounds?

It was amazing the routines that you could fall into, even in circumstances like these. Maybe it was because he had fully embraced the soldier lifestyle that the army had handed him when he'd finally been allowed to enlist. Or maybe it was just because he had to hold onto any kind of purpose that he could muster in a place like this where everything felt meaningless and as empty as the bare, white walls of the center.

The restoration of his best friend was a miracle that he couldn't discount or disregard, but with nothing to do but look for an escape that might possibly take him away again, Steve had felt his attentions divided. Still, he couldn't hover over Bucky, not without making himself relive that day on the train or inadvertently annoying Bucky over something that for him hadn't even happened yet.

They'd come to an understanding, more unspoken than said, where they went their separate ways during the day and came back together to compare notes and plan the next step each night. In fact, there'd even been a small streak of competition arise between them as to who find the most valuable bit of information. Some days they came back with nothing. And other days they had a new room or detail to add to the rough layout of the place.

Which was why when Steve spotted the door labeled basement he didn't hesitate in going in on his own. He still had a couple of hours before he was supposed to meet for the debriefing. Maybe he'd actually be able to find a couple of clues down there.

He walked the side of the empty pool, looking for more information. It was strange to find it in a place like this. Had it been used to uphold fitness? For relaxation? Or had it just been another testing ground for experiments?
