we'll open up a restaurant in santa fe

Who: Reconstruction Club and whoever wants to come by to visit.
When: um... let's say a backdated Day 79 through Day 81? This could be flexible, too.
Where: The semi ruined diner.
What: Cleaning the diner site! Rebuilding the diner! Eating lunch/taking breaks!

The first day, Day 79 Dean's learned from the people who've been here the longest, is mostly spent doing the menial stuff -- making the site workable and cleaning it up a bit, and then training some of the people less familiar with what's going on, figuring out who should handle what and what's safe.

After that it's a matter of slowly getting everything together. Checking the foundation, fixing up the floor, rebuilding the walls, patching the roof. There's some electrical work to figure out and be careful with because some of the equipment is salvageable, so the wiring has to be checked, that kind of thing.

Dean, Erik, and Tony dole out the orders, keep an eye on everyone. Their supplies are what they've managed to gather or whatever people might've brought in.

Fortescue had plenty of thoughts that she wasn't going to voice any time soon, especially to Donna; thoughts about why the Doctor had vanished. Thoughts about what you did with the ringleader when there was a riot. She slips into that mindset a little too easily for even her own comfort. Then again, that was the sheer quality of her training to become what she was.

"Have you given any thought about our roster idea?"

Fortescue laughs softly at the eyeroll, smile just a little brighter, but listens dutifully to his explanation. It must be a cinema, she guesses, quietly wishing that she had the ability to watch more of it herself.

"So, it's about him — McFly? — not creating a paradox." She considers that. "I think the only time travel cinema I've seen was The Time Machine. But it's a young art form, yet. I'm sure we'll get to it eventually."

Although it's like nothing Dean's world has — The Time Machine as done by actors in the forties, with special effects and quality to rival that of his current films. The War has put a temporary end to most pursuits like that, but the cinema was important and it kept hope alive in a struggling people.

"It's too bad we don't have one here. A theatre, I mean."

He chuckles. "That would be a cruel irony when we're working on seawater purification..." He's been busy. He'll take some biscuits though, careful not to take the last of anything. "Thank you, you're an angel." He doffs his cap to her, showing a badly receding hairline, but plenty of manners.

He just shrugs, because it probably is a silly formality after the last time he saw her they sat shoulder to shoulder on the floor of the bar, but he eases himself down beside her with a soft groan. It's been a long day already. "I'm afraid my cooking is only about bachelor-level. Sandwiches, soup, coffee..." He sighs wistfully, and murmurs, "My wife was a good cook..."

"People don't seem too forthcoming with outing themselves. Mina tried to get everyone to take a medical and they were pretty rude to her about it. I suppose just being on a list isn't as bad as a medical though... Maybe we could go door to door and find out who's in each house or sommat..."
noblexcompanion: ([ DONNA ] ♦ oh really?)

Hey, nothing wrong with a receding hairline - it adds character. And good manners definitely make a man! "Yeah, seems the world has a thing about irony. So, just to piss it off, no dying - alright?"

Rat has lots of character. Less hair every year, though. He pulls his cap back on and takes a long swallow from a cup of tea. "Not planning to any time soon, but most people don't really have control over that kind of thing."

"Yeah, well, just be extra careful not to die - or I shall hunt down your corpse and poke it with a stick, alright?" She really doesn't want anyone else she knows to turn up dead.

He looks a little amused, and a little touched, and salutes carefully with the cup. "Yes ma'am." It's actually worth quite a lot to him to have somebody care whether he lives or dies. That's been rare enough, in the past few years.
blackmagus: (♒ haha no really)

Not sure if she yet knows him enough to pursue that comment, Fortescue offers him a smile all the same.

"I suppose we're doing better than people who can supposedly burn water," she quips gently. "Have you done construction work before?"
blackmagus: (♒ thoughtful)

[personal profile] blackmagus 2013-06-20 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Hm." She canted her head to the side, considering that. "That sounds like a great idea. And that way we could see what buildings are being used and what buildings aren't, if newcomers need an idea of where to go poking for housing."

Fortescue's tone turns slightly wry at newcomers. She really hopes that they won't keep piling in. Pretty soon, they'll run out of space. And then there's the idea of more people being trapped in this experiment. But regardless, more and more seem to arrive.

"We just need names, maybe a gender if we're feeling fancy. It's a little less personal than medical records." She smiles. "Or an alias that someone will respond to."
blackmagus: (♒ tell me your story)

She bites her lower lip, smiling, at the thought of a rousing evening of slide-viewing. Yes, maybe it's not really the most riveting way of spending their time (she herself can think of much more lively and satisfying pursuits). Judge Judy, she hopes, doesn't merit and explanation; it seems fairly straight-forward.

It's really too bad that there's no Judge Dredd to prove her wrong.

"At this point I'd take a radio play, and we don't even do those anymore."

She hadn't seen them in the other universe she'd been to, either, which had been enough to tell her that they eventually went out of style everywhere.

"Maybe we'll get lucky and someone around here knows how to tell good stories."
blackmagus: (♒ amused)

Fortescue laughs and playfully nudges his leg with her own. She'd be downright snickering if she knew what he'd been reading, but, luckily for him, she's in the dark.

"Oh, you're too good for us amateurs, are you? I see how it is. Perhaps we should take our amateuring and bruised thumbs somewhere else."

It'll be quite awkward when the houses fill up and people have to start doubling up on rooms. Until recently Donna hadn't even had any housemates and now her house was filling up. Not to mention the food shortage. Eventually they will run out and war will ensue.

"Sounds like a plan!"

What kind of mother hen would she be if she didn't fuss and worry about all the residents? Besides, he seems like a sweetheart. "Glad to hear it!"

[personal profile] blackmagus 2013-06-20 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortescue nodded, having another long sip of her tea. It was good to have plans, here. It made things seem less out of their control. The list, rebuilding, all of the other projects going on — it made the Cape seem a little less dour. To her, at least.

"Did people really raise that much of a fuss when a doctor asked medical records? I was hesitant to report my magic, at first, but..." She shrugged. "Seems like it would be beneficial for the resident medical experts to know what's going on there."

"They practically told her where to shove her medicals. It was practically pitchforks at dawn." Or well, what she can remember of it. It seems forever ago. And Donna hadn't exactly been a willing guinea pig herself.
bluesrat: (sheepish grin)

She's not wrong, in her opinion of him. "Just as long as you promise to stay safe and sound, too."

He chuckles softly, and takes another swallow from his cup. "Some, as a day laborer. I've been... out of work for a while, but sometimes construction sites need a few extra pairs of hands around, so they'd hire me on under the table. Think I might be getting too old for it, though." He gives a grimace and rubs one knee.
