Who: Charlie and Fortescue
What: Fortescue is teaching Charlie how to fish, and that is it. Totally it. Nothing else going on here.
When: Day 96
Where: the pier!
[ so it might have been a little longer than just a few days, but eventually charlie just sat down and messaged fortescue. they settled for the next day, and here she was, sitting out on this pier, with no idea what is going to happen or what fishing even entails beyond pokemon cheats and movie scenes.
but she's also totally cool and not at all nervous because this might maybe possibly be a date but it's not like charlie cares. charlie is just here to learn to fish. and be around a pretty lady. and maybescore see where things go from there. ]

It brings back memories, ones she quickly shoves away.
Jazz steals the first worms she finds, chewing on them noisily, but the rest she puts in a container with a bit of dirt. Her cat in tow, she makes her way to the agreed-upon dock. Time away from her roommates, spent with a cute redhead. She's not complaining. Not in the slightest.
Fortescue smiles as she strides up.]
Hello there.

and it gives her plenty of time to build up that confident smile and: ] Hey beautiful. [ with enough ease that it doesn't sound forced. she eyes the rod and the cup, before kneeling down when fortescue gets close enough to hold her hand out for the cat to smell her. ]
She...or he? Yours?

The black cat, missing part of one ear, regards Charlie with suspicion for a long moment before, slowly, approaching. He gives her hand a delicate sniff, both curious and aloof at the same time.]
Yes... his name is Jazz.
[He blinks his green eyes at Charlie, as if he's sizing her up.]
He doesn't bite. Well, anyone aside from me. [When he was especially irritated, or when either of them was hurt on occasion. He yowled and complained and lashed out like any creature did.] Sleep well? No shared dreams?
[It's more of a tease than anything. She knows it's more or less stopped.]
no subject
So that's how he shows his love?
[ also a tease, but charlie just kind of chuckles and stands back up, holding out to hands to take anything that fortescue will hand her, snorting a little at the dream comment. ]
Not unless Arwen from Lord of the Rings is here too.
[ what? charlie can have good dreams too, every once in a while. ]
Did you manage to keep your head closed off for the night?

[It means not sharing unpleasant memories. She's okay with that. And alas, Fortescue isn't a Tolkien-ite and doesn't get that particular reference. But she gathers it's a character from a fiction series, at least, and smiles, handing Charlie her rod.]
This is yours from now on, assuming fishing doesn't drive you mad. I found it in one of the sheds. Finders keepers.
[Like everything else in the Cape.]
It's not very glamorous, but it'll get you a fish. They like to come under the docks here.
[Jazz pads over to the side and looks over, as if following this train of thought.]

[ which is quite alright, fortescue. charlie would actually love to know that she totally didn't understand that she was talking about a wet dream. especially since she's internally cringing at the fact she mentioned it at all.
instead, she will just take this rod and...kind of stare at it. ]
Can I name it? [ yes, charlie is one of those people. ] I don't know, if people stampeding through my brain didn't drive me off the edge I think I can handle fishing.
[ her eyes follo jazz over to the edge, but she doesn't really follow. just kind of looks back at fortescue with a smile. ]
So when do we start?
no subject
It's yours, now, so of course. Perhaps it'll be good luck?
[It can hardly be bad luck. Unless its name is Can'tCatchFish. And, well, they might as well dive right in. She takes a few steps to the side and sits down, dangling her legs over the side next to Jazz.]
The shadows will deter the fish at first, so most of the sitting around is just to get them to come close. [Fortescue smiles at Charlie wryly.] I hope worms don't offend you?
no subject
[ gosh fortescue, c'mon. but charlie's just kind of smiling anyway, especially as she goes and takes a seat right down next to her. with only a few inches between them. ]
Yeah no, they haven't said anything insulting so far. [ ha ha ] So we're just gonna hang out for a little bit?
no subject
[Fortescue grins.]
That's most of what fishing is. [And plenty of drinking, if you believe Americans, but not for a first lesson at the very least.] That and baiting hooks, so I'm glad you're not squeamish. Ordinarily, I use a slightly different method. But I used to fish quite a lot when I was a child.
[Back before her magical ability had manifested itself. And even then, she hadn't been able to do what she does now.]
no subject
[ and maybe charlie really likes it when fortescue grins. yeah, pretty sure she does. ]
So that's like, impaling them on the hook, right? [ you know, "baiting". but charlie's gonna lean on over that worm cup and just kind of...look back up at fortescue. ] What other method?
no subject
[Which she'd had to do, as a child, because her sister hadn't enjoyed that part. Mirabelle had always claimed to hear them screaming. But then, she'd been a Divinity. Who's to say she couldn't have, at such a young age? ...Fortescue tears herself off that line of thought. She's sitting on a dock with a pretty lady. There's no need to dredge up sad memories.]
I use magic to get them, myself.
