Normally I would suggest the best way to escape would be to send out some sort of distress beacon, but... the technology here doesn't support that. There are enough civilians here that fighting our way out will be difficult. As for why... I'm not sure I could say, accurately. I haven't heard anything that sounds convincing to me, yet.
