Saving the Dead

Who: Martha, the Doctor, Mina, Balthazar, Donna
When: Day 110
What: The earthquake struck during the day when Mina is asleep. Continued from here
Where: Mina's house
Warnings: None

The Doctor was surrounded by some of the most trusted people he knew here in the Cape. Martha and Donna had just shown up minutes after Balthazar and he circled the house.

"Mina is up there." He nods towards her house, which looked like there was some damage, but perhaps not horribly significant. Or so he hoped. However, the structure did not look stable at all, and he was too concerned how exposed she was to the sun, and not to mention whether or not this was catastrophic to her.

It ate at his insides knowing this, and knowing she had helped him so often, it was time for the Doctor to be there for Mina.

"I don't know how stable the structure is, but if we can find her, and find enough blankets..." He swallows, hoping for the best.

Martha pauses for the split second that it takes to understand just how dangerous the situation is, and then follows him inside.

She doesn't ask any questions, just stands near him, examining what she can and waiting for him to tell her what's going on. He clearly knows more than she does.

Mina had a tendency to wake up with her eyes closed. Which meant she could hear all the better. As the sun went down and the magic that animated her body did its work, she found herself puzzled by the sounds around her. The world felt oddly muffled. As though she were underwater.

She puzzled over this briefly, but then made the mistake of turning her head slightly. Her face felt like it was on fire at once, brushing against a blanket that didn't smell like her own. A sting raced across her skin. A searing pain that made her see red on the inside of her eyelids.

When she opened her eyes, she was greeted by darkness.

And at that point, she felt a sudden, sharp pain in her ribs.

Martha's eyes slid over to the Doctor as she evaluated his reaction. She hadn't realized he was such a close friend to Mina. She put that out of her mind and focused on Mina again. Or, at least, she focused on the blankets that were Mina.

"I guess we'll see once she wakes."

And then there was movement.

"Mina, it's Doctor Jones and... the Doctor. It'd probably be best if you didn't move."

Donna looks terrified. "Oh no... Doctor, we've got to get to her." She doesn't know what the consequences of Mina being in the sunlight might be but she can't imagine they're good.

On the plus side; if anyone on the Cape could rescue her it would be Donna's two most favourite guys. Mina is in good hands.

"Do we have some place safe to take her?"

Mina made a face as the Doctor pulled away the blanket. A few fibers stuck to a burn against her jaw and she winced, shutting her eyes. "Bloody hell," she swore. She tried to sit up and immediately regretted it. White hot pain coursed through her torso. Several more creative curses, largely in Norse and Babylonian bubbled up to the surface and she dropped back flat on the floor again.

"Broken ribs," she grunted as a bloodred haze settled over her eyes. "At least two. Possibly more."

It was hard to make a proper analysis while being wracked with pain.

"Where the hell am I and what happened?"

Balthazar is stock still with his hands pressed against the wall, listening, but belatedly he answers Donna, "Possibly the diner, unless you've got a better suggestion."

It's hard to sense an undead person beneath rubble. "I think I've found her, but the place is not at all stable. I'd better go in alone."

"We're at the diner. There was an earthquake. A pretty bad one. The Doctor alerted us that we needed to come help you.

"I don't have supplies for the broken ribs. Burns..." She rummages through her bag.

"Nothing for anything above second degree, but this will help with those. As for the rest, I need to do a physical. And it's going to hurt."

Mina waved the both of them off, suddenly becoming keenly aware of the fact that she didn't have her rings. Or her hat. Or her suit. She was practically bloody naked, except for her button-down and the irritating blankets, which she at once tried to untangle. Of course, every blessed movement sent new waves of pain through her torso.

She let out a sound, half laugh, half agonized cry. "Save the medical supplies for the living," she told Martha. Under ordinary circumstances, she could have already healed the broken ribs. And as for the burns...there was nothing to be done about those. They would have to heal on their own.

Dropping her head against the ground, two trickles of dark red blood ran down either side of her face, from the corners of her eyes to her ears. Kindred tears. Which, of course, was even more embarrassing than the rest of it. "Get these blankets off of me," she said. "They hurt."

"For goodness sake Mina. Stop moving. You know as well as I do that's not going to solve anything." Martha's voice takes on a ring of authority that wasn't there before.

She pulls the blankets back and pulls an handkerchief from out of a pocket. She presses it into the woman's hand for the tears and looks to the Doctor to help Mina with wiping them away.

"I can't be the only medical doctor here Dr. Barrett. And I don't know anything about vampires. What do you need to heal?"

"The diner? Yeah! That could work! It seems to be still standing quite well." There's always Donna's house, but she hasn't had a chance to check the structural damage upstairs yet. Downstairs seemed relatively stable save for the broken plates and glasses. But if there is a second rumbling later then the diner would probably be more likely to remain standing.

"Balthazar? Please be careful... Don't get yourself killed for the sake of playing hero." Because if anything happens to him... Donna sighs. "Doctor! We should fetch blankets. As many as we can find."

Mina handed the handkerchief to the Doctor. She didn't mind the tenderness, but at the moment, the scientist in her was taking over. "Don't get that in your system," she said through gritted teeth. She had no idea what vitae would do to a Time Lord. And frankly, she wasn't too eager to find out.

Lying down flat, she enjoyed a brief moment free of the blankets. Her legs seemed none the worse for wear. She had a few nicks here and there, but other than the ancient, P-shaped burn wound, they appeared to be more or less intact.

Gingerly, she touched her ribs. It sent shooting pains through her and she quickly removed her hand.

"Definitely broken ribs," she mumbled. "I don't think I have enough blood in my system to heal them. They'll need to be bound."

"I'm sure that if the whole bloody house collapses on me, I still won't die. Anyone who can't say the same should stay out here, and there should be someone outside anyway, to warn others away." He's genuinely not certain how tough the Doctor is physically, but Donna's vulnerable, and he's not about to let her go in if he can help it.

On the other hand, they don't have much time to argue. He leans toward Donna to pat her shoulder reassuringly. "I'll be fine, don't worry."

Don't worry he says? Don't worry? Well, it's easy enough to say that, angel butt, but Donna is going to worry all the same about Balthazar and about Mina. Worrying is in her nature and her friend is in danger and her friend that she keeps kissing is putting himself in danger to rescue said friend. How is she not supposed to worry?

She distracts herself from her worry by seeking out blankets. The thicker and the darker the better she imagines. To block out the light.

The Doctor has always been a touchy feely person. But the tenderness he shows Mina... Martha turns her head to blink back a tear and clears her throat.

"Binding the ribs won't be a problem. It'll take some time to heal though. As for blood..."

She pauses, unsure what she was about to say.

"We do have a few pints in the clinic. They're not O-, which means they're only useful if I find someone with the correct blood type..."

"Darling," Mina said through gritted teeth, "if you don't calm down, I'm going to hit you." Something of a hollow threat, given how much it hurt to move. But at the moment, his panicky demeanor was frightening her a little bit. She wasn't entirely used to see him act so...

...human?

She turned her attention on Martha and sensed...something. Something amiss. Bloody hell.

"I don't want to take away blood from anyone that needs a donation," she said. I can live with broken ribs. Humans can't live without blood." She offered her a humorless smile. "You see? This is why I wanted records of everyone's blood type."

[personal profile] notrosesshadow 2013-09-18 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
She called him darling.

"Take the blood Mina. If anything it'll get him busy. Otherwise he'll start pacing and hovering, and you really don't want that. Nor are you in any condition to hit him. And the quicker you're healed, the quicker I can go back to working only the dayshift."

Her words come out just a touch more derisive than she meant them too. Martha softened her gaze before turning her attention to the Doctor.

"There's a pint of B- in the small fridge unit. You can find the transfer equipment in the drawer next to the fridge."

The B- was her blood, as she was the only one who had donated yet. She'd start asking some of the others soon. Ned maybe. Possibly Charles.
