"Would you like some juice?"
Okay yes, he's still a child. Juice is where it's at. "The cat can have milk too if it wants, I'll find a saucer."

Jazz sits down at her feet as she watches him move about. While she'd been a very dutiful child herself, due to a hundred different factors, he's much more polite than she'd ever been. Fortescue sits down in a chair that's been left out, smiling.
"Are you always a night owl?"

Occasionally he has to lift himself on to the very tips of his toes to reach something but it's minutes before he's bringing the juice and the saucer over. "I like to read at night, the house is quiet."

"There must be a lot of nice reading nooks, in a place like this," she notes. "What do you like to read?"

He says it brightly but with the air of someone who has often been told off for silly endeavours, "I like books about time travel. And aliens."

People don't tend to ask him these kind of questions and so he's only slightly suspicious, "I want to work out what makes people different from each other."

"I imagine there's plenty of mystery there to last you a lifetime."
no subject
"I hope so too. I like mystery. What do you do?"

Not when you were the one out there, anyway. There's certainly plenty of excitement — hence why spy fiction is so prevalent — but unless you're of the right mindset to enjoy it, it's pure stress. Fortescue herself struggles with whether she does enjoy it.

He watches Jazz with interest but there's no sign that he's ignoring her, more than he's divided his attention between the two. A soldier and a cat. "That's very brave."

"It's something I need to do. And it's important. So, I do it. But I think you'll be getting a much better arrangement, as a scientist."

Which is apparently the main thing.

It certainly beats the paperwork, right?

They're not friends, and the howls are anything but cute. But the story is true, otherwise.

Charles had been fond of her.

Charles isn't too keen on America but he doesn't voice that. "Mother says America is a place of opportunity."
