Blackout, House 11
Who: Balthazar, Rat and Open!
What: Lights are out. They should build a pillowfort and tell scary stories, right?
When: Day 101
Where: House 11, with possible visits around town by Balthazar, should anyone want that.
All right, so the blackout is, in itself, not terribly alarming. Inconvenient, yes, but provided the weather stays tolerably warm and nothing horrible comes out of the woods to kill them, it's just annoying.
At least in the short term. In the long term, water will need to be boiled and distilled, food storage will have to be tweaked, etc. Balthazar's hoping it won't come to that. Right now, it seems best to treat this as temporary.
On the second day after the lights go out, he's taken the initiative to snag some supplies from the store and junkpiles around town and created a couple makeshift light sources: three candles and an oil lamp in an empty wine bottle. The dim glow is visible from outside the house, a small circle of golden flames. Combine it with a little of the moonshine he's gotten from Ellen and it's almost festive, in a rustic sort of way.

no subject
Balthazar has known guys to ascribe gender to cars, yes, as well as certain vital organs other than the liver. He's not questioning Alec on that point. "Well, you and your liver have fun with that, then, but if one of you passes out, don't blame it on me."
Dang. I am so slow with logs lately. I apologize big timeeee.
He smiles and shrugs his shoulders. He pulls up a chair from the other side of the kitchen table and takes a seat next to Balthazar. "I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. You're decent. This hooch--ain't gonna kill me. Won't even make a dent. Homemade moonshine doesn't really do much to genetically engineered human beings."
It's okay!
He kind of doubts Alec's sensibilities are any more delicate than his own, actually. He watches mildly as the younger man pulls up a chair, head tilting with interest. He's privy to secrets now? That's interesting. But then, Balthazar's usually trustworthy with confidential information.
"Genetically engineered for durability, I take it. Strength and speed as well? Intelligence? There are a number of people here who appear to be ordinary humans but aren't, by any stretch of the imagination." Actually, baseline humans are probably the minority in Kore at this point, but he hasn't taken a poll or anything. "I'll keep your secret, but you might find more empathy here than you expect."
