Sea monster attack!

Who: The kidnappees, rescuers, and whoever wants to wait on the beach with towels. See here for an explanation.
When: Afternoon Day 102
Where: The beach
What: The device holding the sea monster at bay has been without power for two days, and now he's... lonely. Or angry. Angry and lonely. But now he's kidnapped some new friends!

The network has been spotty, cutting in and out for a couple days now, but luckily for everyone currently in the monster's grasp, Stane happens to be standing in the middle of a decent signal area.

"The sea monster is taking people! Hurry!"

The beast loosens it's hold on Donna. Not much, but enough for her to manage to pull herself free.

It's all still a bit of a blur. All bodies and hacking and slashing and flailing tentacles.

Dirk had expected this, but that doesn't make him feel any better about it actually happening. He's not going to get too near the water, but he's watching the efforts from further back on the beach, feeling a bit helpless and definitely not wanting to dive in and battle a giant...whatever it is.

It feels a bit heartless to just head back to the house, so he's left standing watch.

The broadcast caught Martha by surprise, but she was prepared. She grabbed the woefully small medkit she had made and ran for the beach. It was a madhouse. And everyone was in the water it seemed. She pushed by someone and threw the medkit down as well as her coat so she could try to get in the water as quickly as possible to help whomever needed it.

"If you're coming out with us, you should lose the shoes."

He doesn't have a problem with Rat signing up either; he's capable, and more hands are probably best in this situation since... How in the hell do you fight a sea monster? Punch it in the face? He doesn't think even his dad's journal would have tips on this. They weren't really the beach hunting types.

He keeps his eyes on Shiala and the goings on in the water, arms at his sides and body tense, ready to bolt if things get drastically more serious.

Castiel's focus is on Donna and as soon as he sees her slip free, he kicks off of the tentacle, pulling her to the surface with a surprising amount of strength. He doesn't speak until they break the surface.

"Are you injured?"
bluesrat: (whut?)

[personal profile] bluesrat 2013-08-21 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
He blinks, a little surprised, but takes the knife like somebody who at least won't stab themselves by accident. That's all the capability he knows how to display, really. "Wait, you're swimming out after it?" He opens and shuts his mouth, slightly at a loss, then gives a resigned nod. There's no disrobing of any kind, but he starts after the nearest tentacle without any further hesitation, intending to stab and slice as well as he can. Maybe he can at least distract the thing long enough for Dean and Jo to actually save somebody.

"No better way to get close, right?"

Jo grimaces, running her hand over the handle of her the knife still secured at her belt before she starts to head for the edge of the water at a quick clip. Her shoes are already taken care of, and her clothes aren't going anywhere. She can deal with being soaked through. She dives in without further hesitation, starting to swim out towards the sea monster in long strokes once the water is deep enough.

"Come on, hurry it up!"

Dean goes running after Jo, his focus on getting to Shiala; they can figure out how to take out the whole monster once they get her to safety. At least, that's his plan, but once he starts swimming out and trying to see under the water, he realizes just how long these tentacles are.

And then Dean's getting pulled underwater, one tentacle wrapped around his ankle.

He goes down splashing, but he whips out his knife and starts hacking.

"It's closer to five."

Derek is currently residing in the lighthouse, so it doesn't take him long to reach the beach, even if it's not as quickly as it could have been considering he's still concealing his condition.

He doesn't know either of the men he happens to be standing by, but he turns to the second and frowns, eyes briefly lowering to glance down at his rib area. "You're hurt." Hurt isn't much good if it gets in the way of helping. He barely spares the first a look, the scent similar to that of the angel who helped his friend, close enough that he can put two and two together.

Wallie reaches, straining to grasp the Doctor's hand, but he can't reach, and it's becoming strangely difficult to move much in any direction. A numbness, a stiffness, a tension in his muscles that goes far beyond adrenaline. Some sort of poison, he realises, but it's far too late to do anything.

Around him, the tentacle gives him a vicious squeeze, then flings him to one side; Wallie hits the water with a splash. Were things different he could swim to safety, but now, he simply can't. He sinks, unable to swim to the surface, and he doesn't even have the muscle control to hold his breath.

He thinks of Jja as water enters his lungs, cold and dense, and blacks out shortly after.

Rat's opted for wading out, rather than swimming, long legs allowing him to get pretty far out by that method. When he sees Dean go down, he lunges in that direction, hacking away inexpertly at the tentacle in an attempt to free him. He's no expert with a knife, but the concept doesn't require much skill.

"NO! WAIT!" The Doctor is in disbelief, seeing Wallie thrown like a child's toy to the side without a care in the world. His hearts sank in his chest knowing he failed the man, knowing that he should've done something more.

A short moment later, which really felt like an hour later given the Doctor's current state, he spots something break the surface of the water - Castiel and something that looked awfully alot like Donna.

Swallowing down the numbness, he quickly rushes to them. "Is she alive!?" Because he wouldn't be able to live with himself if two were killed by this beastie, as it flailed it's tentacles with rage.

Turns out that someone who Martha had pushed past is, in fact, a very distressed piemaker whose face should be familiar to her. He's been watching others heading out into the water with an ever-increasing degree of despair and fear. He ought to be one of them, he thinks. He can swim well enough - but what good would that do? Once he was out there, what help could he provide? Ned has a hard enough time defending himself on dry land. Logically, he knows he would be a liability out there. Which is why he stays on the beach, and hates himself a little for being so useless.

When he sees that Martha, too, is about to throw herself into the water and harm's way, he calls out to her, "Wait!" He dashes around her, between her and the water, holding both his hands up in a calming gesture. "You shouldn't do that."

Ned spots Dirk by his rather distinctive mop of hair, can see the worry and defeat in his posture even from a distance. He walks over to where Dirk is standing, arms folded tightly over his chest, trying and failing abysmally not to worry about the people who have been taken, the people who have gone out after them. There are people he cares about out there, and he feels completely powerless to help them.

He's not sure he'll be able to help Dirk, either. But he'll offer what consolation he can.

"Guess it came true, after all."

Martha almost barrels him over in her haste to get into the water. "They need my help Ned. I can't just sit here and watch them!" She tries to go around him, tracking the Doctor's movements and the fiery hair that had belonged to that Donna woman she'd met on the comms her first day.

"Just stop and think for a moment!" Ned is actually desperate enough to halt her advance that he reaches out, puts his hand on his shoulder to keep her back. It's a light touch, not enough to really stop her if she were determined, but he hopes it will catch her attention, at least.

He speaks so quickly that he's only just understandable, "You're right, the people out there do need your help and I know it's hard to stay here when they're out there and they might be getting hurt, but Martha, they might be getting hurt. You're a doctor, right? You're one of the only doctors we've got here. What's going to happen if you swim out there to fight the giant, y'know, terrifying sea monster, and you don't come back? Or what if you're out there and someone comes back and they're hurt and there's no one to look after them but me?"

Donna's chest burns. Her lungs feel like they're working harder than ever. She knows she's lucky to be alive. Kicking her feet to stay afloat, despite Castiel being the one who dragged her to the surface and probably more than strong enough to support them both she tries to calm her breathing down. Not an easy task when the sea monster is still close by and very, very pissed off.

"I'm fine." Well, alive at least. She'll take it for now. Cas really is her guardian angel. Saving her is becoming quite the habit.

"Everyone else?" Despite her own minor injuries, near drowning and panic attack of a life time she still finds it in her to worry for the others.

She hears the Doctor before she sees him. "Can't get rid of me that easily, Spaceman. You okay?"

"And what if they die out there when I could have saved them?" Martha begins. As far as she was concerned, these people deserved to live far more than she did.

"Besides, Dr. Barrett is here. She'll take care of anyone who's willing to go to her. Ned, The Doctor's out there. I can't... I can't let him get hurt."

But even as she says it, Martha knows she's not in any condition to go swimming out there to save people. She's strong, but still not as well fed or as well rested as she should be. She won't be of any use.

Martha stops fighting him and steps back. She drops to the beach and spreads out her backpack so she can lay out her tools on it.

Balthazar barely has a glance for either of them, straining to catch a clear glimpse of whoever's in the water. He sees a flash of red hair--oh, no, Donna!--but he also sees Castiel diving into the sea, and a moment later Raphael and Samandriel are on the scene. So it's all under control, right? He should stand down, stay out of the way.

And then he sees someone else familiar, splashing fiercely against either the monster's grip or the undertow, or both. It's Riley, and that's all he needs to know to spur him to action. "I'm going." Ripping off his jacket impatiently, he points to the brunette head amidst the waves. And then he's off, flying partway for the sake of getting there faster.

He gives Derek a glance, nods brusquely, acknowledging the statement, but quick to amend it with an "I'm fine." Better off than the people who're being taken by the sea monster, anyway, and he's got a weapon. Broken ribs aren't going to get in the way of his being a damn good shot, but there isn't a lot of time to think about this strategically, not once Balthazar takes off towards the water.

Within several seconds, his decision is made, and he's following after, quickly but a little more cautiously, tossing a glance over his shoulder to see if Derek's coming, too. He doesn't know the guy, and to be fair, he doesn't know Balthazar or Riley that well, either, but this isn't the kind of thing you simply stand by and let happen. Gun in hand, he makes his way down the beach, looking for an opportunity to get a good shot off on that monster without endangering the people that're being dragged under the waves.

For the damsel in distress, this was bullshit. A girl couldn't go for a jog on the beach without having a tentacle yank her out into the waves. She'd fought it, sprouting claws and fangs to try to slash and bite at the limb, but there were sharp ridges on it that normal octopi and squid didn't have, cutting into her. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but there was something on it, something it excreted that was getting into her bloodstream and burning.

Which was her only excuse for why she was now further out than she could stand, valiantly trying not to swallow more water as she felt it tugging tenaciously on her leg. No way was she going to get killed by some Popeye reject, a feline roar leaving her as she tried again to claw at the tentacle around her, mostly oblivious to what was happening on the beach. That might also be in part because of the fact that her wounds weren't healing and the poison was making her feel nauseous and muzzy.

The splashing is more than enough to catch her attention, and Jo is quick to turn despite being mostly submerged, treading water as she reaches to draw her knife from the sheath at her belt.

"Dean!"

The blade might not be much in comparison to the size of the tentacles, let alone the kraken itself, but damn it, she'll work with what she's got. She dives beneath the surface, holding her breath but forcing her eyes open to get a look at where Dean has been pulled, moving forward and slashing at the offending appendage when it dares to come near her. She surfaces a moment later for air, but she's still close enough to strike, her jaw set as she plows forward, focused.

"Let go of him, ugly!"

Castiel looks over when the Doctor yells, too late to do anything but realize that they've just lost someone and he hardly has the power to revive anyone here.

He grips Donna tightly. "We should get back to shore before it makes another grab for one of us."

Part of him wants to go after Wallie--feels that he should, but if he does and it gets Donna or the Doctor killed, that would be worse. He needs to keep them both safe.

With the three of them working, the sea monster gives up, tentacle letting him go quickly and retreating into the water to nurse its wounds. Dean comes back to the surface and coughs, shaking water out of his eyes, and he readjusts his grip on his knife, the better to swim with.

"Seriously, you gotta work on your smack talk," he tells Jo, then gives her a breathless smile and glances back at Rat before he waves them all on, swimming straight toward Shiala.

Ned understands all too well what Martha is going through. Perhaps not to the same extent, of course, but there are people he cares about deeply out there. He, too, has stayed on shore because he knows he wouldn't be fit to help, though in Martha's case, Ned doesn't think of her as unable to swim out and fight so much as more useful staying back, getting ready to treat any injured people who turn up on shore.

He looks between her, setting out her medical supplies, to the water, and back again. Martha is useful here; he is not. Not useful here, not useful in the water. Or is that just a lie he's telling himself to excuse his own cowardice? Ned feels sick with indecision and worry, mutters, "Shit, maybe I should-"

But how hypocritical would that be, if he yelled at her not to rush into danger and then turned around and did exactly that, himself.

"I can't fight." He doesn't know why he's justifying himself to Martha, other than the fact that she's here, that she was willing to fling herself into the water regardless of danger. She's so much more competent than he is, so much braver, so that it seems effortless. Ned wishes, with a sudden ferocity, that he were like that. But he isn't. "I know I'd just end up getting in the way. It's not b-because I'm scared. Although I am. Scared." He is, in fact (as the seconds and minutes creep by and he thinks more and more about the fact that his friends might be getting hurt) verging close on terror.

The feeling of helplessness, of a complete lack of control, is perhaps more detrimental to Ned than actual peril would be. There's a tightness in his chest that won't seem to go away, making it hard for him to breathe. But he tries to ignore it, because there are people out there trying to swim and fight at the same time, people who have been pulled under by the monster who might be drowning right now. His lungs burn as if in sympathy for them and he wonders if any of them have died, yet. Ned feels lightheaded and sits down on the sand, ready to spring up again in a moment if he sees anyone (or anything) coming out of the water.
